It has been a fairly quiet week in the sports world leading up to the NFL preseason starting tonight. Here are a couple of my favorite pieces from the past week…
– First, I really enjoyed this piece from Dan Collins from the Winston Salem Journal on Dickie Hemric right after his passing last week. Hemric was a NC native who put Wake Forest on the map in their initial years in the ACC.
– Next, ahead of the PGA Championship in Charlotte, the Winston Salem Journal released this article on Webb Simpson and how he must get some momentum early in the tournament. Webb is a Raleigh native and Broughton High School alum that now resides in Charlotte, and Quail Hollow is his home course, so Webb should have a little advantage over everyone else.
– With the first Panthers preseason game today, the coaching staff has been working tirelessly over the offseason to make sure another sub .500 season doesn’t happen again this year. I enjoyed going behind the scenes with Ron Rivera and learning about how chaotic his daily routine was during training camp with this piece from Scott Fowler of the Charlotte Observer.
- – Jumpman, Jumpman, Jumpman! Last week, the long awaited reveal of the Jordan Brand UNC football jerseys occurred in bold fashion. Not only does the new uniform combo feature the Jumpman logo on the jerseys, but on the practice helmet as well. I liked this piece from Sporting News on the new rebranding.
Tweet of the week: Not sports related but a nice view of Eastern NC after storms raged this past week…
Our photographer visited the Outer Banks before power was restored. Highway 12, usually packed with cars in August, was eerily quiet. pic.twitter.com/1Qg94Kt3LE
