Four months down, and 2016’s already been a quality year for hip hop: Kanye West, Kendrick Lamar, Future, A$AP Ferg — even Drake — have all released albums. Not a bad haul, eh? That’s a sturdy lineup of rap heavyweights; however, my personal favorite album of 2016 is none other than Genesis by Domo Genesis.
This record includes the track of the week, too: “Faded in the Moment.”
Some may recognize Domo from his involvement with Odd Future. Tyler, The Creator, Hodgy Beats, and Earl usually get the most run when it comes to the West Coast collective, but Domo, the resident pothead of Odd Future, has long stood out, too. I got into him back in 2011 with his first mixtape, Rolling Papers, which I will still bump on occasion.
Cam O’Bi helped write and produce the track. He’s a disciple of J. Dilla, and that makes Cam cool in my book. According to O’Bi, his first breakthrough came from working with Chance the Rapper on the phenomenal Acid Rap mixtape. So lets hope to hear more from this dude in the nearish future.
The entire 12-track album is a smooth 42-minute listen, and well worth a spin. Also, Anderson Paak, who’s currently having a moment, is on here, too. So that’s cool.
