Stat Boi’s Track of the Week #5

Chappelle-player-haters-ball

Welcome to a special holiday version of Stat Boi’s musical posting — Christmas Eve edition! As you well know, the Christmas album that’s sweeping the nation right now is A Very Panther Christmas: Vol. 14-0. However, these aren’t the only holiday tracks I like to bump while sipping egg nog; as usual, we turn to OutKast.

Going back over the years, my favorite Christmas song has long been “Player’s Ball” by OutKast, and it’s my track of the week.

Yes, in case you didn’t know, this fantastic number, which was the group’s first single from their debut album Southernplayalisticadillacmuzik, is in fact a Christmas song.

Here’s a little more backstory on the song, and why it was initially Christmas themed, courtesy of NPR.

Also, here’s the version of “Player’s Ball” that’s become famous, features one of the greatest music videos of all-time, and inspired a classic Chappelle Show sketch.

Merry Christmas, everyone! Enjoy all the amazing NBA action tomorrow.

Stat Boi’s Track of the Week #4

It’s Saturday, and there’s a ton of college hoops on tap and a heavy NBA lineup this evening, so hopefully you’re chilling in front of the television — and further putting off that Christmas shopping. Don’t worry, you’ve still got time! Well, sorta. While you’re lounging on the couch, check our track of the week: “Mistake” by Type MHG.

Now, here’s the upshot with this dude: His real name is Macario Hing-Glover, and he’s a sophomore striker on Duke’s soccer team. According to my razor sharp research, Hing-Glover played in 16 games this season, recording three goals and two assists.

For a little more background on Type MHG, and how he balances soccer, school and a rapidly expanding music career, here’s an excellent profile from Nick Martin over at The Chronicle: “From 0 to 100: Rapper Type MHG.”

Stat Boi’s Track of the Week #3

run-the-jewels-miike-snow-2It’s Friday, and almost quitting time, as we get ready to enter a big sports weekend in NC. Clemson and UNC battling for the ACC crown in Charlotte, the undefeated Panthers looking for win No. 12 against the Aints, and the Hornets taking their show on the road for a good Eastern Conference match-up with Chicago Saturday night.

If you, for whatever reason, needed more encouragement to get excited, well, might I suggest turning your speaker’s volume up to max and blasting this track: Miike Snow (back again, finally) and Run The Jewels — Heart is Full Remix. Good luck avoiding brick walls to run through!

From the North Cack Stacks: The Weekly Best in NC Sportswriting

seinlibrary

Things are pretty awesome in North Carolina sports right now: the Panthers are 11-0, the Hornets are in 7th place in the East and sporting a top-10 offense, UNC football is 11-1 and has a matchup with No. 1 Clemson this Saturday in the ACC title game, and UNC hoops is fresh off their win over No. 2 Maryland Tuesday. And the Carolina Hurricanes are…eh, lets just leave that one alone. Here’s out weekly best in North Carolina sportswriting:

First and foremost, a tip of the cap to one of the best sportswriters in North Carolina: Tom Sorenson who, after 35 years with the Charlotte Observer, is retiring. Here’s his column on why he’s finally decided to take a break.

Over at WRALSportsFan — Joe Ovies on ESPN’s inability to retain television subscribers — a major problem for the network, and how that could impact TV money for college athletics (i.e. conference media rights).

On Wednesday night in Charlotte, the Charlotte Hornets honored the franchise’s all-time leading scorer: Dell Curry. However, as Ethan Strauss of ESPN writes, the real fireworks came when Dell’s son, Steph (heard of him?), took to the floor and rained manna from the heavens — 40 points (28 in the3rd quarter) on 14-18 shooting (Stat Boi’s eyes fall out of their respected sockets). He didn’t even play in the damn 4th quarter, and according to Strauss, he scored his last 14 points during the final 1:53 of the 3Q.

(Stat Boi note: You should watch as many Golden State games as possible — they are just immensely entertaining. Also, Charlotte, despite poor shooting, kept this sucker close for nearly 36 minutes…until Curry became engulfed in flames and ran away laughing.)

Scott Hamilton of the Winston-Salem Journal has the rare, yet necessary, #HotPunterTake on Wake Forest’s Alex Kinal not being named first team all-ACC, which, yeah, didn’t make a whole lot of sense. Good stuff in here from Scott.

Pro Football Focus number cruncher Nathan Jahnke has an update on Luke Kuechly’s season: Despite missing essentially 3.5 games, Kuechly is having, by some metrics, the best season for an inside 4-3 linebacker in the last ten years.

It was an uneasy first month of play for Duke’s stud freshman Brandon Ingram, but against Indiana, writes our buddy Stephen Schramm of the Fayetteville Observer, the 6-9 native of Kinston, North Carolina flashed the all-around game that made him one of the most-hyped rookies in college basketball this season. Also, since we’re talking freshman college basketball players, I’m required by law to mention the name Ben Simmons.
