College Football Coach Approval Ratings

Our friends over at Public Policy Polling have some new numbers out about how the people of North Carolina feel about Gov. Pat McCrory and other public figures, as well as blah blah blah…

Ok, but they also asked some questions about sports, specifically what respondents thought about their favorite team’s head coach.  We take a look at the approval ratings, and then give our official “Media Approval Rating” for each coach for 2015.

Larry Fedora, UNC

Screen Shot 2015-12-10 at 10.41.07 AM

Media approval rating:  83%

He’s no longer slamming Red Bulls nor producing amazing gif content, but he tends to keep it short, and isn’t immune to some sideline hysterics.

Dave Doeren, NC State

Media approval rating: 65%

This is down from a high last year when he was subtly rubbing his rival’s face in the dirt in the post-game press conference right after doing it on the field. And that was after letting it be known that there weren’t a lot of preseason All-ACC players on his team earlier in the season. This year it was mostly mum. But he’s cordial, and we’ll take that.

Dave Clawson, Wake Forest

Screen Shot 2015-12-10 at 10.41.27 AM

Media approval rating: Not sure.

Look, it was only his first year here. Give us some time to get to….wait, what? It was his second year here? Man, we really gotta meet Dave Clawson.

David Cutcliffe, Duke

Screen Shot 2015-12-10 at 10.40.23 AM

Media approval rating: 79%

This was a dip for Cutcliffe, who has always charted in the 90s in our ratings. But the Miami debacle put him in a no-win situation in how to talk about it, and the lack of a media beef with Paul Johnson this season hurt him.

Scott Satterfield, Appalachian State

Screen Shot 2015-12-10 at 10.40.14 AM

Media approval rating: 48%

Satterfield seems like a great guy, a damn good coach, and a pretty easy conversation. But let’s be honest, you’re playing your first year in the Sun Belt and you didn’t invite SportsChannel8 to do a “Hard Knocks” type series covering it? You had to know that was going to hurt you somewhere.

Ruffin McNeill, ECU

Screen Shot 2015-12-10 at 10.40.33 AM

Media approval rating: 1,000%

And we hate exaggerated statistics.

College Football Day in North Carolina Kicks off October 2nd

football

College football attendance has been a hot issue across our state for some time, but the past few weeks have boiled over to a point where we have schools calling out other schools and players calling out their own fans. Pictures of empty stadiums have circulated around social media, and though there’s plenty of context to be added with the oppressive heat from two weeks ago and the pouring rain from this past Saturday, it’s still an unfavorable display of support for our football teams.

In a span of 24 hours, beginning Friday night in Charlotte and ending Saturday night in Buies Creek, 22 of North Carolina’s 32 college football teams are playing on North Carolina soil. SportsChannel8 is fiercely determined to make this Saturday, October 3rd, “College Football Day in North Carolina”.

Our goal is simple … we want 150,000 fans to attend college football games in North Carolina this weekend.

That’s an estimated 90% capacity across all games being played across the state, which is aggressive, but attainable. More details will be released throughout the week, but for now, buy tickets to the local game of your choice and wear your team’s colors, whether they are playing or not. Find a game close by, take a road trip, or simply find the cheapest tickets you can get your hands on. Every fan counts.

If you can’t make it to a game this Saturday, support the cause by spreading the word to those who can, and spend your Saturday cheering on your favorite team in front of the television.

Keep looking out for more details, contests, and prizes from SportsChannel8 and our sponsors, and check out the schedule below to find a game near you.

Let’s make Saturday #CFBDayNC.

App State beats Michigan: Wayback Machine heads to 2007

appalachian.state

While Fergie dominated the radio with Big Girls Don’t Cry, mighty Michigan was expected to dominate Division 1AA guest Appalachian State in September of 2007. It didn’t work out very well for the Wolverines as they fell victim to one of the biggest upsets in college sports history. Join us as we hop into the Wayback Machine from the point of view of the play-by-play Voice of Mountaineers and an Ohio State fan who has become a significant voice in college sports media.
