RIP The Dab, November 4th, 2015
Though there were many factors ultimately leading to its demise, it has now been determined the official cause of death for The Dab was “white coaches.”
1. South Florida 10-2 (Covered all november games. quality non cover vs Navy is something that is helping them.)
2. Southern Miss 10-2 (They will look back at the non-cover vs UTEP at home as the one that got away)
3. Oklahoma 9-3 (5-0 ATS record in true road games is something committee love)
4. Ohio 8-4 (HUGE late season cover against #12 Northern Illinois)
5. Temple 9-3 (Not covering against super bad UCF earlier in season is what kept this from being a special season)
6. UVA 8-3-1(6 straight covers. Didn’t cover vs FCS team tho early…See Syracuse too)
7. Toledo 8-2-1 (When you are this good ATS it is no shock that your coach leaves for a better job)
8. Florida State 8-4 (5 straight covers and 6 of last 7)

A source close to the situation reported to SportsChannel8 that the popular Duke bar Shooters Saloon announced a ban of all North Carolina students, effective immediately, via a Facebook post on the establishment’s home page.

The post has since been removed and replaced with the following statement:

Shooters is well known throughout the Triangle area as the preferred night spot for Duke students, and especially Duke student athletes. As highlighted in an April expose by News & Observer sleuth Dan Kane, Shooters may seem like a typical college bar on the outside, but inside patrons often find themselves in the grimy underworld of binge drinking and sex, especially with popular people.
It’s unclear if the ban on UNC students is related to the findings of the Kane story, or just a case of students being assholes in their rival school’s town. Stay tuned to SportsChannel8 as more details emerge.
A Tennessee mom that attended the Panthers-Titans game had trouble explaining Cam Newton’s “pelvic thrusts” to her child, among other things. SportsChannel8 reporter Hayes Permar tracked down a kid to learn more about their perspective on things.
While Mitch Trubisky was being announced as the ACC Offensive Back of the Week, UNC coach Larry Fedora was simultaneously naming Marquise Williams the starter at quarterback moving through this week’s preparations. The announcement certainly changes the tone of the Tar Heels football program moving forward.
“Marquise Williams is our starter,” Coach Fedora said. “There’s no quarterback controversy.”
At his weekly press conference, Fedora was quick to praise Trubisky, saying “[w]e started being more efficient offensively, opened things up.” Meanwhile, on Williams, Fedora stated, “there were some things that were done in the game that [Marquise] wasn’t coached to do.” Even so, the reins were snatched from Trubisky and handed to Williams.
It remains to be seen if Trubisky will earn his coach’s trust back and see snaps in the future. Refusing to play a strong contributor in key games is not something Fedora does often. More on this situation as it develops.
A year ago, unranked Duke shocked the top-ranked Tar Heels 1-0 in one of the best men’s soccer games of the entire ACC season. As of right now, it’s unclear if they’ll have the opportunity to do the same again this season.
Due to “inclement weather”, UNC has decided to postpone tonight’s rematch with no makeup date planned at this time. In the wake of 2014’s controversial postponement of the Duke/North Carolina basketball game in Chapel Hill due to snow and ice, rumors began to swirl that North Carolina was intimidated to play the Blue Devils tonight while most UNC fans would be looking ahead to tomorrow’s football showdown with Delaware instead of focusing on the soccer rivalry. We sent our SportsChannel8 Breaking News minivan to Chapel Hill to investigate the conditions of the roads between the Duke campus and UNC’s Fetzer Field.
UNC’s athletics administration has not yet issued a response.
Word came down from Indianapolis on Tuesday that NCAA student athletes face a loss of eligibility for participating in fantasy draft sites such as FanDuel and DraftKings as part of the continued effort to curb gambling among college athletes. Single-day cash games through these fantasy draft sites are considered legal in the United States because of the interpretation of the contests as “skill-based gaming”.
With significantly blurred lines between the skill involved in selecting players who in no way are controlled by the participant and the skill involved in successfully navigating through a game with cards the participant is dealt, the NCAA decided to remove any gray area and include fantasy drafts in their definition of gambling, much like NCAA bracket pools.
As with any NCAA clarification of existing rules, it’s not uncommon for sanctions to quickly follow the announcement to set precedent and serve as an example of the seriousness of the regulations.
SportsChannel8 is giving you $10 to spend on drafting a group of ACC schools who will have the first player losing eligibility for involvement with DraftKings or FanDuel. Please use our promo code “JAMEIS” to enter the contest. Not you, student athlete. This is not for you.
